CAIRO, 2024 July 29: Egyptian fencer Mohamed El Sayed won the bronze medal in the men's Fencing Épée event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, giving his country its first medal in the games.

El Sayed (21 years old), ranked tenth in the world, defeated Hungarian Tibor Andravesi on golden point 8-7.

He exploded with joy after securing the bronze, jumping in the style of Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo!

El Sayed achieved three victories over Colombian John Edison Rodriguez 15-7 in the 32nd round, Italian Andrea Santarelli 15-11 in the 16th round and Belgian Nicer Loyola 9-8 on golden point in the quarter-finals, before losing to Frenchman Yannick Burel 9-15 in the semi-finals.

El Sayed eliminated Burel, the gold medalist at the Rio 2016 Olympics, in the round of 32 of the Tokyo Summer 2021 edition.

El Sayed began fencing at the age of six in Tanta, influenced by his parents' work as fencing coaches.

El Sayed, who studies data analysis at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York, began his Olympic career at the Tokyo Summer 2021 Games, finishing eighth in the Epee.

His compatriot Ziad El-Sisi reached the semi-finals of the Sabre competition on Saturday, but failed to win a bronze medal.

This is the fourth medal for Arab fencers in the history of the Olympics, after the silver medal won by Tunisian Fares Ferjani on Saturday in the Sabre competition, the silver medal won by Egyptian Alaa El-Din Abou El-Kassem in foil (London 2012) and the bronze medal won by Tunisian Ines Boubakri in foil (Rio 2016).
