Ibrahim Adel, Egypt's captain, scored in the 10th minute of the encounter against Mali, giving The Pharaohs an important three points in the U-23 AFCON in Morocco.

This victory sent the Egyptians to the top of the group after opening their participation with a draw against Niger.

Egypt and Niger are the favourites to reach the semi-finals as they share the top with four points each ahead of the final round of the group.

"Defeating Mali was no easy feat, and we are content with our performance. Now, we must regroup and prepare for our final group match against Gabon," Ibrahim Adel stated after the match.

Egypt needs a draw in their final group stage match against Gabon to book their place in the next round and move a step closer from qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games.

The top three teams of the competition will secure a direct ticket to the Olympics, while the fourth-placed team will play in the AFC–CAF play-off.
