CAIRO – 18 July 2017: It is known that football referees use either the yellow or the red card when they give a booking to a player. However, few people know that another card exists.
The green card has been introduced lately in the football world for a noble cause. The green card aims to support the players who perform a fair play act.
The green card was used for the first time in October 2016 in a Seria B, Italian League second division, match between Vicenza FC and Virtus Entella FC. It was awarded to Vicenza’s former player Cristian Galano who told the referee that the ball is not a corner kick for his team.
Seria B’s president Andrea Abodi told Goal after the use of the green card, “It’s a symbolic award. It could be something very simple. The important thing is to recognize it when a professional does something exemplary.”
The player gets notified that he received the green card at the end of the match and not during the match.
