CAIRO - 12 July 2022: The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced that they have reached an agreement with Rui Vitória to be the new manager of the Egyptian national team.
The Portuguese coach signed a four-year contract with the record seven-time champions of Africa and the EFA hopes that Vitória can guide The Pharaohs to book a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Known for his fast attacking football, the EFA officials believe that Vitória is the perfect choice to bring a smile back to the fans in Egypt after a tough year, during which Egypt lost the 2022 AFCON final to Senegal and lost a spot in the upcoming World Cup after losing to the same opponent on penalties.
Vitória is one of the veteran managers in Europe, having coached one of the European giants, Benfica, for four years, having led them to win two league title but his legacy was about developing the youth players and giving them the chance.
Atletico Madrid's João Felix, Manchester City's Ruben Dias and Wolverhampton Wanderers' Nelson Semedo all played their first game with Benfica's senior team when Vitória was in charge of the team.
Vitória's only season in the Middle East was a success after leading Al Nassr of Saudi Arabia to win the domestic league title after a four-year hiatus.
The Portuguese coach will start his mission with the Pharaohs in September when Egypt plays two matches against Malawi in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
