CAIRO, 7 February 2022: Egypt national team director, Wael Gomaa, described the Pharaohs players as champions, despite the defeat in the 2021 African Nations Cup final against Senegal.
Egypt lost the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal on penalties, 4-2 after a 0-0 draw in the original and extra time.
Wael Gomaa spoke to "BeIN Sports" after the match, saying: "We made a very big effort and reached the penalty shootout, and if we were in a better physical condition, it might have changed."
He continued, "The players played 4 physical matches at a very, very high level. We overcame Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco and Cameroon, the organizers of the tournament, and then we met Senegal."
"All the players we consider to be the heroes, despite the loss, and they have gained very great experiences, which we will feel in the upcoming matches," Gomaa added.
"We tested ourselves against Senegal and saw that we could qualify for the World Cup."
Egypt will meet Senegal twice in next March in the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.
