CAIRO, 6 February 2022: Egypt will play the final match of the African Cup of Nations this evening, Sunday, February 6, 2022, against Senegal, at the Olympic Stadium in the Cameroonian capital, Yaounde.
The match starts at exactly nine o’clock in the evening, Sunday, Cairo time, at the Olympic Stadium.
The match is led by the South African referee, Victor Gomez, the referee on the pitch, and the first assistants are Zachary Soila from South Africa and an assistant Tani Soro from Lesotho, while the fourth referee is Jean Jok Ndala Congo, and the VAR referees from Morocco led by Adel Zuraq Bushra, first VAR assistant, and Zakaria Prince, second VAR assistant.
The national team started its campaign in the current edition of the tournament with a surprising defeat, losing in the first meeting in the group stage against Nigeria 0-1, then winning over Guinea Bissau 1-0, and beating Sudan with 1-0 as well, to qualify for the next round accompanied by Nigeria.
In the 16th round, Pharaohs beat Côte d'Ivoire 5-4 on penalties, before defeating Morocco in the quarter-finals 2-1, then Cameroon 3-1 on penalties, to set the Pharaohs against Senegal in the final match.
The Egyptian national team fought extra-time 3 times during the tournament, with a total of 360 minutes, to be the most time that the Pharaohs have played historically throughout the African Championship.
25 out of 27 players participated with the Egyptian national team during the tournament, to be the most historically number of players to participate with the Pharaohs, and only the duo Mahmoud Gad and Marwan Daoud did not participate from the list of the Pharaohs.
On the other hand, the Teranga Lions qualified to the next round as the first of the group which they led by five points, after beating Zimbabwe 1-0, and drawing with Guinea and Malawi without goals, and in the round of 16 Senegal beat Cape Verde with two goals without a reply, and in the round of 8 the Treanga Lions won Guinea Equatoria 3-1, before advancing to the final after defeating Burkina Faso in the semi-finals, 3-1.
The final is the tenth for the Egyptian team in the African Nations historically, to be the most to play the final match after dismantling the partnership with Ghana.
Carlos Queiroz became the fourth foreign coach playing the final match with the Egyptian national team after Joseph Titkus in 1959, Mike Smith 1986, Hector Cuper 2017.
Egypt aspires to achieve the eighth African star in this edition, in light of the early exit in the last edition in 2019 and the loss of the title in 2017 against Cameroon.
The Egyptian team is also seeking to show their capabilities by defeating Senegal before the two matches of the play-off stage of the World Cup qualifiers.The first match will be held in Cairo on March 24, while the second match will be held in Dakar on the 29th of the same month.
