CAIRO-7 January 2022: Mohamed Abo Gabal, Egypt national team goalkeeper, and Essam El Hadary, the team's goalkeeping coach, have tested positive for COVID-19, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) said on Friday.

The pair will not travel with the rest of the team to Cameroon on Saturday and they are expected to join the delegation when their results come out negative.

According to some reports, Carlos Queiroz, the national team coach, discusses taking a caretaker goalkeeping coach with the team to Cameroon.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) gave the participating nations the chance to register 28 players for the competition, which is the first to be held since the COVID-19 outbreak.

Egypt plays in Group D alongside Nigeria, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.

The Pharaohs will start their mission in the competition on Tuesday against Nigeria, bringing back the memories of their start in the competition in 2010 when they defeated Nigeria 3-1 in the opening match of the group and eventually won the title.
