CAIRO-21 September 2021: Tala'ea El Gaish won the first title in the club’s history after defeating Al Ahly 3-2 on penalties on Tuesday night.
The players honored the late Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawy as they observed a minute of silence before the match and wore black armbands during the match.
“It is the hardest day of my life. Today I lost my godfather Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawy and I would like to dedicate this title to him.” El Gaish coach, Abdelhamid Bassiony, said after the game.
Borg El Arab stadium in Alexandria hosted the game, which saw an attacking game from Al Ahly players against a solid defense from El Gaish players, who succeeded to secure a goalless draw in both regular time and extra-time, sending the game to penalty shootouts.
Mohammed Bassam, El Gaish goalkeeper and captain, was the hero for his team, having saved three penalty shots, securing the victory for his team.
“It is a historic title for the club. We only had one week to prepare for this tough game but we stepped up to the mission and won the game.” Bassiony added.
