CAIRO-18 August 2021: Gernot Rohr, Nigeria national team head coach, stated that the opening game of 2022 Africa Cup of Nations against Egypt is a very good start for the Super Eagles.
"The first game is very important; Nigeria-Egypt, it’s a very good game and we would see, we have to finish top two in the group to go into last 16, it’s not an easy group but we are very confident,” The Nigerian coach said after the draw according to Premium Times.
Egypt and Nigeria met on 8 occasions at the Africa Cup of Nations. The Pharaohs won 2 games, lost four and the other two matches ended in a draw.
The last meeting between the two teams bin the competition was in 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola in the opening game of the group stage and ended with a 3-1 for the Egyptians, who eventually won the title.
Rohr added "We will have at least one or two friendlies before the competition, we will start our campaign on the 11th (January). It’s the third day of the tournament so we have a bit more time but we have to be in Cameroon on the 6th – five days before the competition."
Egypt will start their journey in the competition against Nigeria at Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua before facing Guinea Bissau in Matchday 2 of the group.
Egypt will end the group stage in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, against Sudan.
