"My sons, the heroes of Egypt's national handball team, I am proud of you and your heroic performance and I would like to praise your competitiveness spirit and high morals during your participation at the [2020] Olympic Games. Your beloved country is waiting for more determination and effort from you to continue achieving championships and honouring the flag of your country in the international events. I wish you all the best in the upcoming competitions,” tweeted President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

After an impressive run in the first round, Egypt reached the quarter-finals of the competition as the group's runner-up with four wins and a single loss against Denmark.

Egypt defeated Germany 31-26 in the quarter-finals after a fantastic display from the Pharaohs to secure a place in the semi-finals for the first time in the nation's history.

The Pharaohs faced France in the semi-finals but the European superpower had the upper hand to secure a place in the final while the Pharaohs set up a clash with Spain in the bronze-medal match.
