Al Ahly's last game against Pyramids ended in a goalless draw
CAIRO-1 July 2021: After securing their place in the CAF Champions League final, Al Ahly are back to the domestic league and they will face Pyramids on Thursday in week 27.
The two teams are heading into the game with different emotions. Al Ahly took huge steps towards defending their African title while Pyramids were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup semis after losing on penalties to Raja Casablanca.
Pyramids will play their first game under the command of their new Greek manager Tokas Gonias, who replaced the sacked Argentinean Rodolfo Arruabarrena.
The game between the two teams emerged in the last few years as one of the new derbies in the Egyptian football after Pyramids strengthened their squad with several Al Ahly stars, including Al Ahly fans favourite Ramadan Sobhy, who left his childhood club last summer to join Pyramids in a mega cash deal.
Al Ahly boss Pitso Mosimane hopes to achieve his first victory over Pyramids as his two meetings with them ended in a draw.
"We are back to the domestic league and we have a game against Pyramids and they are a very good team. The first time I faced them, we played 70 minutes with ten men against eleven and we should have won that match. We did not have the same performance when we played them eleven against eleven and the game ended in a goalless draw.” Mosimane told Al Ahly official website.
Al Ahly want to return to the Egyptian League with a solid performance as they are 20 points behind the leaders Zamalek but they still have 8 postponed games in hand.
The game starts on 9:00 PM.
