CAIRO - 6 July 2017: Atletico Madrid announced on Wednesday that Spanish striker Fernando Torres has a one year extension contract for the 2017/2018 season.
“I am really happy to continue one more year together,” remarked Torres on the club’s official website.
Torres began his career at Atletico Madrid before joining Liverpool in 2007 and moving to Chelsea in 2011. The 33-year-old striker returned to Atletico at the start of the 2015/2016 season on loan from AC Milan, before completing his transfer to Atletico permanently.
Having played in 45 matches in the last season, Torres netted 10 goals and four assist, according to Soccerbase.
Atletico Madrid was sanctioned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) due to irregularities in contracts for players under the age of 18, in addition to other breaches regarding registration and participation of team players. The sanction prevents the club from registering any players at both international and national level for two consecutive transfer periods.
As reported by FIFA website, the ban will continue until 2018 as Atletico has already served part of their ban (i.e. January 2017 registration period).
