CAIRO-22 April 2021: Smouha's captain Hossam Hassan scored a late goal for his team, earning a surprising win over the title holders Al Ahly at their stadium.
It was clear that Al Ahly will face difficulties in the match despite going to the game in high spirits after a vital win over arch-rivals Zamalek on Sunday in Cairo derby.
Al Ahly missed many key players but the team's starting goalkeeper and captain, Mohamed El Shenawy, returned back to the team after missing the derby game due to being tested positive for COVID-19.
Al Ahly's problems started early as the visitors opened the score after 10 minutes by a goal from Mohamed Halimou.
Halimou received a fantastic pass from Al Ahly loanee Ahmed Abdelkader and finished off the pass with a shot into the back of the net to put his team in front.
Al Ahly had many chances to equalize but they failed to convert it. Hussein El Shahat equalized the score for the home team with a superb finish in the 33rd minute.
Al Ahly players pushed forward in the second half, searching for the winning goal in the game but Smouha players stood their ground.
In the final minute of the game, Al Ahly players upped their pressure to find the winning goal but the opposition surprised them with an efficient counter-attack.
El Shenawy left his area to send a long ball to the opponent's box but Smouha players won the ball, started a counter-attack and the ball reached Hossam Hassan who dribbled two defenders and shot the ball in the empty goal to score the winning goal for the visitors.
Al Ahly did not have the time to bounce back and the game ended with a 2-1 victory for Smouha.
Al Ahly stayed second in the league table with 30 points, three points behind the leaders Zamalek, who have played two games more. On the other hand, Smouha jumped to the fifth position with 27 points.
