Frizz is one of the most common hair struggles women face; and whether you are a curlyhead or prefer sleek and straight locks, flyaway is definitely not what you want. Some of us resort to easy and fast solutions like straightening to banish frizz, but on the long run, this will cause more damage to your hair. The only right way to deal with frizz is by understanding the causes first.
What causes frizzy hair?
1. Very hot shower temperature
There is no doubt that hot showers are very relaxing, and especially in winter, we tend to spend longer time under hot water stream to feel warmer. As pleasing as it feels, this hot temperature is not doing your scalp any favor. Hot water can strip your scalp and hair of their natural oils that keep the hair soft and shiny. So this lack of moisture will lead to dry frizzy hair.
2. Towel drying your hair vigorously
Your hair is more fragile and weaker when it is wet, and accordingly tends to break easily. Vigorous towel drying or brushing can cause damage to your locks. This is why it is important to dry and brush your hair delicately when it is still wet.
3. Frequent heat styling
Excessive heat styling can cause damage to your hair such as breakage and split end which both make your hair frizzy and out of control. If going heat-free is not an option for you, make sure you use heat protecting products to create a shield or a barrier against the harmful impact of heat.
Now that we know the triggers of frizzy hair, and while some of the factors we cannot avoid altogether like weather conditions and humidity, here’s how to manage frizzy hair.
Do find the right products for your hair type. Rethink the products you use. If you are fighting frizz, then definitely clarifying shampoos aren’t your best bet. Instead, go for deeply nourishing shampoos, anti-frizz serums, and leave in conditioners. Low shampoos can be a good option, especially if you wash your hair frequently.
Don’t Shampoo Every Day. If your hair is prone to get dry and frizzy, shampooing every day is the last thing you want to do. At least keep a day between shampoos so you give time for your scalp to produce its natural oils that help fight frizz. Also, make sure you use sulfate-free shampoo as it is less damaging and gentler on your hair.
Do use lots of conditioners and deep moisturizing treatments. Especially if your hair is curly, make sure your hair is always moisturized. Use conditioner on the ends every time you shower and avoid using it on your scalp, especially if you have oily scalp. Use deep moisturizing treatments such as masks or hot oil bath at least once a week to keep your hair bouncy, shiny and frizz-resistant.
Don’t over-brush. Constantly brushing or combing your hair can damage hair cuticles, especially when it is still wet. Additionally, detangling your hair roughly will get your hair out of control. The best way to detangle your hair is by using a wide tooth comb and working your way from the bottom up. Make sure you are using a high-quality brush. There are brushes that are specifically designed for wet hair and detangling.
Do use microfiber towels. Switch to either a microfiber towel or an old cotton t-shirt. They both perform better as they cause less friction, and accordingly no frizz. Don’t scrub your hair too hard with the towel and try to avoid touching your hair until it dries completely.
