CAIRO - 20 January 2020: For the first time in Egypt, the government is planting trees and roses on bridges in Heliopolis.
"Trees are also planted on the Family Court Square Bridge, which was established to ease traffic congestion," Mohamed Faisal, head of the company that implements the bridges, told Egypt Today on Sunday.
Faisal added that a contract has been signed with a company specialized in planting walls, adding that 10 bridges have been established in Heliopolis to solve the traffic crisis and overcrowding in the main intersections.
Faisal added that the idea of the project was presented to the officials of the Engineering Authority of the Armed Forces, and was approved after having been studied well to make sure that it does not affect the state and structural safety of the bridge.
Faisal said that the cultivation of trees within bridges and walls helps to purify the air and reduces pollution.
He explained that irrigation and drainage networks have been placed along the cultivated areas, and that the excess water is drained so that it does not affectthe bridges. This is in addition to carrying out periodic maintenance.
