CAIRO – 10 May 2017: The low-land country of bikes and tulips is famous for many things, food not being amongst them. As dedicated food lovers we traveled to Holland in search of the best foods present in this low-land country. What follows is a list of “must-eats” in Holland..

1- Cheese:
The most obvious thing to try in Holland is its famed dairy products- most especially its highly acclaimed cheese. An array of Dutch cheeses can be tried in any cheese shop, free of charge..

2- Dutch fries:
Yes you read it correctly, and it is way different from French fries: it is thicker and you can add to it any sauce that comes to your mind, the most famous amongst them being ketchup with mayo and peanut butter sauce. The latter is not for the faint of heart, do be warned!

3- Stroopwafels:
It is just like the Egyptian “Freska” sold typically at the beach, but in Holland it is sold fresh from market stalls or packed in souvenir and candy shops. It comes in a variety of flavors, maple syrup being the most traditional. Caramel was my personal favorite.

4- Herring:
We are not the only nation in the world that eats herring- the Dutch do as well, albeit in a completely different manner. It is one of their favorite foods, and it is season specific. June is the recommended time to eat it. The herring is cut horizontally, stuffed with small chopped onions and served with cucumber pickles on the side.

5- Poffertjes:
Don’t get shocked by the name, it is simply very tiny fluffy pancakes that is typically served with powdered sugar and butter.

6- Bitterballen:
This is a famous meat snack usually served in pubs with mustard sauce.

And, finally, one of the weirdest foods that exist in Holland- dry bread with sprinkles, with nothing else added.
