Marrakech Restaurant- Egypt Today/Sherif Anis
Our pick this week is Marrakech at the Helnan Landmark New Cairo. Resident Moroccan chef Mariam serves up a deliciously authentic harira spiced with ginger and saffron. Served with freshly baked bread and brimming with chickpeas, the hearty dish is a meal in itself and offers a true taste of Morocco.
North African cuisine is all about sharing, so order a few dishes and sample the heartwarming flavors. Traditional couscous takes pride of place on any Moroccan dining table and Mariam weaves it into many of the entrees on offer at this restaurant. Pair with the miniature meatballs in aromatic tomato sauce which are soft and buttery and infused with chili flakes for an unexpected kick.

Also rather unexpected is the Pastilla traditional Moroccan chicken pie. Tender morsels of cinnamon-flavored chicken are rolled with almond slivers and wrapped in a flaky pastry then baked in the oven. The beautifully presented pie arrives sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar for an interesting twist on sweet and savory.
No Moroccan meal would be complete without a tagine and you wouldn’t want to miss the veal variety served here. A layer of couscous lines the clay pot and is topped by a mélange of vegetables including zucchini, pumpkin and colorful bell pepper. A pot of thickened stock arrives separately for extra flavor.
