CAIRO – 23 January 2018: Hedi Slimane has been named the new creative and artistic director of CÉLINE in order to widen the menswear, couture and fragrance lines.

“I am delighted to join Bernard Arnault in this all-embracing and fascinating mission for Céline; I greatly look forward to returning to the exciting world of fashion and the dynamism of the ateliers,” Slimane commented in a statement reported by Business of Fashion.

Slimane started his career as an assistant at Yves Saint Laurent during the 90’s. At Dior, Slimane managed to universalize the skinny silhouette in men’s formal and casual wear; during that period, he also launched the Dior Homme's first fragrance "Higher".

Pierre Bergé had positioned Slimane as director of the ready-to-wear men's collections at Yves Saint Laurent in 1996. Slimane would go on and return back to Saint Laurent in 2012 as womenswear and menswear lines creative director to finally leave his post in 2016.

LVMH chairman and chief executive Bernard Arnault commented in a statement, “I am particularly happy that Hedi is back within the LVMH Group and taking the reins of our Céline Maison; he is one of the most talented designers of our time. I have been a great admirer of his work since we collaborated on Dior Homme, which he launched to global critical acclaim in the 2000s. His arrival at Céline reinforces the great ambitions that LVMH has for this maison.”

Slimane is a successor to Pheobe Philo, who has spent 10 years as Celine’s creative director and empowered women with her minimalist designs such as the Trio and Trapeze.

Slimane will continue being based in sunny Los Angeles a city which has always inspired him.
