A sneak peak at South Sinai’s underrated canyons

CAIRO – 4 December 2017: There are quite a few carved canyons in South Sinai’s desert, hills and mountains. These canyons, which are mostly hidden among Sinai’s landmarks, make for a beautiful, exciting safari.

White Canyon
Located near St. Catherine, the White Canyon is soft and rocky, starting as a crack with a sudden deep drop between extremely narrow walls; it then opens up a bit before coming to a deep drop.

The canyon is easily accessible, with Dahab road and Nuweiba road on each side and Ein Khudara Oasis a short distance away.

Visitors are able to climb up and down the canyon using robe and ladder.

Closed Canyon
Carved between the Ein Kudara Oasis and Wadi Ghazala, it starts with a small crack in a sandstone range running between steep vertical walls.

The canyon’s name is inspired by its narrow path, making it difficult for people to walk through certain points on the path.

At the end of the enjoyable but narrow path, visitors come to an open area with huge walls where they can rest and enjoy the canyon.

Salama Canyon
It bears in resemblance to the colored canyon, starting as a crack in a rocky area of sandy Wadi Ghazal, but gets deeper a little further in.

The canyon, which is connected to Wadi Disco, home to a tiny Bedouin Settlement, provides a great escape with its carved walls for visitors to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Khraza Canyon
Situated in a high mountain near the town of St. Catherine, Khraza Canyon is compromised of a few interconnected waterpools in a beautiful granite canyon.

The canyon is connected to Wadi Umm Serdi and close to Wadi Mathar, at the base of the St. Catherine range, making it possible to visit all three must-see sites on the same day.
