CAIRO – 30 October 2017: “My favorite words are possibilities, opportunities and curiosity. I think if you are curious, you create opportunities, and then if you open the doors, you create possibilities.” - Mario Testino
Testino is recognized as one of the most influential and in-demand fashion and portrait photographers in the world.
Born in Lima, Peru to a traditional family, Testino was isolated from the world of art and luxury. Soon after he relocated to London to pursue his passion for photography his career began to take shape when he was commissioned to photograph a haircut by stylist Lucinda Chambers for British Vogue. “I noticed an evolution in my work… when I tried to recreate my youth in pictures.”
Suzy Menkes, Vogue’s international editor said of Testino’s artistic style, “Testino’s skill is first and foremost to catch the moment and to bring out the humanity in his subjects.”
His work has been featured on the covers of Vogue, V Magazine, Vanity Fair, GQ, Allure and many more. He has also created magnificent imagery for branding and marketing campaigns for gigantic power houses such as Gucci, Burberry, Versace, Michael Kors, Chanel, Estée Lauder and Dolce & Gabbana.
He photographed princess Diana for the cover of Vanity Fair’s 1997 July issue, just one month before she tragically passed away. “One of my greatest experiences in life was photographing princess Diana. It’s not only that the experience itself was amazing, but she opened a door for me because I then started photographing the royal families of Europe extensively… this brings out my love for tradition, for a way of showing family and the longevity of people.”
Fun Facts:
● Throughout his 40-year career he has moonlighted as a creative director, guest editor and a museum founder.
● Nicknamed the “John Singer Sargent of our times” by Terence Pepper, photography curator at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
● He founded MARIOTESTINO+ a full-services creative agency due to the high demand from his clients.
Another quote for the road:
