On Their Way Out
1. Skinny jeans Reports of the death of skinny jeans date back to 2014. Unfortunately it has been a slow death in some cases for this trend as its die-hard fans remain. Skinny jeans are unflattering on some women, but also a bit boring when they’re the only cut that’s in your closet.
2. Floral crowns Whether they’re made of natural blossoms and flowers, or of plastic, metal or jewels, floral crowns had their day in the sun at this summer’s slew of outdoor music events and festivals. For 2016, they’re officially over in all their forms.
3. Chunky plastic necklaces Some of these were more like hanging sculptures than jewelry. And they were a lot of fun, especially when paired with a dressy white shirt. They gave an outfit that element of surprise. But chunky plastic necklaces have been so overdone that they’re no longer surprising. If you want to make a statement with oversized jewelry in 2016, try a pair of stand-out earrings.
4. White nail polish Crisp, white nail polish looks great on tan skin at the beach, worn with a turquoise maxi dress or light denim. But for 2016, we’ve got our eyes on the deep grays, burgundies and purples that compliment the colder seasons.
5. Sweat pants Pairing sweats with dressy heals was new, chic and daring when it was first attempted by fashionistas months ago. Now dressed-up sweats are getting a bit old.
On Their Way In
6. Highwaist pants This season skinny jeans have been eclipsed by 1970sinspired high waist pants, where the waistline climbs past the belly button to heights the runways haven’t seen in years. Not only are high waist pants more flattering on many women than low rise cuts, they also look fresher on the runways than the tired skinny jeans.
7. Flared jeans Whether you opt for slightly flared or full-blown bell bottoms, flared jeans (especially when worn with heels) will elongate your legs for miles and give you a sleeker, cleaner silhouette.
8. Browns As expected with the emergence of 1970s-inspired styles, brown is back in fresher, more dazzling shades than the wellworn sweaters and coats of previous seasons. This time, it’s paired with coppers and other dazzling colors to make it pop. Find it on anything from suede coats and furs to evening gowns.
9. Polished loafers A good pair of polished loafers can pull an outfit together just as much as a towering pair of heels. Loafers can be dressed up or down, and worn with jeans as well as dresses.
10. Statement tights The fall runways were filled with dazzling tights in bright and eye-catching patters, replacing the dark or denim leggings of seasons past.
