CAIRO – 3 October 2017: Zahra Lari is an Emirati figure skater. She was born on March 3, 1995, and she is the first figure skater in the United Arab Emirates to compete internationally.
Lari became interested in figure skating when watched Disney’s “Ice Princess” at the age of 12. She asked her parents if she could take figure skating classes and compete. Lari adds to her Harper’s Bazaar Arabia interview that both of her parents were worried that she would be injured from skating or that it would affect her grades in school.
However, after they saw her passion for the sport, they became supportive. Within three years of training, she became a master of complicated spins and jumps.
She is not only the first Emirati to figure skate and compete internationally; she is also the first hijabi figure skater in the world. Plus, she is featured in Nike’s campaign for Nike pro-Hijab.
This year she decided to compete against the biggest names in the world of figure skating at the Winter Olympics in Germany.
