CAIRO – 2 October 2017: Muslim Hijabi girls are breaking the norms by dressing up and getting into character as princesses, superheroes and animated characters.

Hijabi Muslim girls are always trying to find new and creative ways to integrate modesty into everyday life and now they have become cosplayers while creating their very own modest super hero costumes.

Cosplay is the art and practice of wearing costumes that portray characters from fiction, especially from manga, animation, and science fiction. Cosplay is a Japanese word which is a combination of two English words; costumes and play, it was introduced in the 19th century for costume parties in the U.S. and fancy dress parties in the UK. It evolved in 1939 when people started wearing costumes to the first world science fiction convention (Worldcon).

However, the term cosplay appeared in 1984 when Nobuyuki Takahashi (founder of Studio Hard) attended the 42nd Worldcon in Los Angeles and was impressed with all of the costumes, coining the term.

Recently, hijabi girls all over the world started getting into cosplay. The first cosplayer was from Malaysia. Her name is Kira and she is 23 years old. Her passion and her talent lay in creating costumes to inspire Muslim girls around the globe.

Kira was inspired by a British Muslim named Diana, who broke barriers by wearing superhero costumes with a hijab.

Cosplay became a trend among Muslim girls around the world and it has helped them send a strong message to the world, showing them that the hijab is no barrier for them and that it is actually an asset to them.
