According to Famous People, “Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian lawyer who became the primary leader of India's independence movement.”
He was born on October 2, 1869, and passed away on January 30, 1948.
Gandhi wanted to become a doctor, but his father was hoping he would become a government minister. Hence, in 1888 Gandhi sailed from India to England to study law.
He struggled to find work as lawyer in India, so he obtained a one-year contract to perform legal services in South Africa.
He returned to India in 1915 and joined the Indian National Congress. Then, he established himself as a dominant figure in the Indian political scenario in 1920. He called all Indians to unite and to put all their religious differences a side. He also asked Indians to boycott all British educational institutions and services.
In 1922, he got arrested by the British and was imprisoned for 2 years.
Gandhi's actions in the Satyagraha movement inspired future human rights movements around the world.
Fun Fact:
● Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times.
