CAIRO – 8 September 2017: On November 17, 1965 UNESCO decided to declare September 8 as The International Literacy Day. This day aims to put literacy of individuals, communities and societies in the spotlight. This celebration takes place in several countries.

The UNESCO will celebrate International Literacy Day this year under the theme of ‘Literacy in a digital world.’ The global event is organized today at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris. It aims to focus at what kind of “literacy skills people need to navigate increasingly digitally-mediated societies, and to explore effective literacy policies and programs that can leverage the opportunities that the digital world provides,” as mentioned in the UNESCO website.
