CAIRO - 5 September 2017: Russian experts have granted positive assessment to Terminal 2 in Cairo Airport’s terminals, Maksim Sokolov, the Russian transport minister, stated on Monday, according to Tass, a Russian news agency.
"At the meeting between Russian and Egyptian presidents, I will be reporting to the heads of the two countries that Egypt has gone to considerable lengths to intensify aviation and transport security measures in Egyptian airports, particularly in the Cairo Airport. Having studied the security situation in Terminal 2 of the Cairo Airport, our experts gave a positive assessment of what they had seen," Sokolov said.
An aviation safety protocol between both countries was agreed on February 17. This protocol implicates that Russian experts will scrutinize the achievements in the safety measures at the Egyptian international airports.
Russia suspended flights with Egypt in October 2015, when a Russian passenger plane crashed in Sinai after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh. All 224 people on board, mostly Russian nationals, were killed. The Russian plane incident was identified by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi as a terror attack.
Following the airplane crash other countries suspended their flights to Egypt. Germany, Poland and Turkey have since resumed flights; the UK, formerly a major source of tourists to Egypt, has not done so.
