Cairo – 22 August 2017: “When you go out of your comfort zone and it works there's nothing more satisfying.” - Kristen Wiig
Wiig was born on August 22, 1973 in Canandaigua, New York. She first attended university as an art student where she took her first acting class only then to be encouraged by her teacher to pursue acting as a career. As most comedy actors do, she moved to Los Angeles and joined the improv and sketch-comedy troupe, The Groundlings. Like many past members of The Groundlings she joined the ranks of the SNL cast members such as Maya Rudolph, Will Ferrell, Phil Hartman, and Jon Lovitz.
Her spot-on character impressions of Penelope, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Suze Orman made her a fan favorite on the show and also the most senior female cast member appearing in more sketches per episode than any other cast member.
After her departure from SNL, Wiig co-wrote and starred in ‘Bridesmaids’ (2011), with Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, and Rose Byrne. The movie earned them two Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay, and two Golden Globes nominations for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical and Best Actress. Needless to say, the movie was also a hit at the box office.
Fun Fact: She is of Norwegian Irish, English, and Scottish descent from her parent’s grandfathers.
