ALEXANDRIA, Egypt - 6 August 2017: In the memory of Dr. Ahmed Zewail, Bibliotheca Alexandrina on held an event to honor the Nobel Prize laureate.
The event was attended by a number of public figures and speakers from different backgrounds, all sharing honor and respect for Dr. Zewail and his work over the years.
Among the speakers were Dr. Zewail’s wife, the governors of both Alexandria and Kafr El-Sheikh, and Dr. Ahmed Okasha, head of World Psychiatrist Association.
Dr. Ahmed Zewail’s wife, in an honorable act, dedicated his books and library to Bibliotheca Alexandrina per his will, as she stated.
The event was held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a large number of attendees. Documentaries about Dr. Zewail’s work, in addition to his speeches, were shown.
Dr. Ahmed Hassan Zewail was born on February 26, 1946 in Damanhour City and was the first Egyptian and Arab scientist to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the year 1999. Dr. Zewail developed a very fast laser-imaging system that has the ability to monitor the movement of molecules when they arise and when they are welded in a new time unit, in which the picture is taken in a femtosecond, part of a million billionth of a second. He published more than 350 scientific research papers in specialized scientific journals, such as Science Magazine and Nature Magazine.
Dr. Ahmed Zewail is the founder of the non-profit Zewail City of Science and Technology, which aims at the development of scientific research in Egypt, under his slogan “Masr Tastatih” (Egypt Can).
