CAIRO – 5 August 2017: Summer is here and you know what that means! Beach, sun, and easy-breezy hair! You want that fresh summer look that’s right for your skin color and hairstyle, but there are several ways to go about it, and you just don’t know which one is right for you. Here, I will untangle that mystery, and give you a breakdown of what “ombré”, “sombré”, “babylights”, color-melt, and “balayage” are.

“Balayage”:
Ok, so it all starts and ends with “balayage.”It is a technique to get“ombré”,“sombré”, “babylights”, highlights, faded roots, and more. “Balayage” is also known as hair painting. Hair color is painted on to create a gradual effect that is natural looking. You can blend different colors and play with multi-dimensional colors.

“Ombré”:
I like to use the “Balayage” technique to achieve an “ombré” look. “Ombré” is dark at the roots and fades into a lighter and lighter color as it gets to the ends.
Here, our stunning client at Toi Beauty Salon chose blonde hues for a soft and natural “ombré” look, with effortless loose waves. The look is chic and natural, and says “I spent 5 minutes doing my hair this morning”.

“Sombré”:
“Sombré” is a soft “ombré”. Higher up towards the root, the color is more blended to achieve a more natural look, the ends however, remain light. There is a very subtle darker color throughout the hair.
Our beautiful client went for lowlights that bring out her eye-color to create her soft and subtle “sombré” look!

“Babylights”:
To achieve “babylights”, or micro-highlights, I like to separate hair into super-small sections that may be 3 or 4 hairs each. This gives the highlights a more natural look. This golden Mob (Mid-length Bob) has hints of dimensional darkness throughout, but no obvious dark-to-light fade. The “babylights” achieved an overall natural touch and balance between light and dark.

Color-melt:
If you already have light-color hair it’s easier to achieve color-melt. Done by blending two colors together and creating a dark to light finish from root to end.
