5 Tips to Cope with Exam Stress

Exams are around the corner and we know that students out there must be stressed. Exam stress can be overwhelming and exhausting to the point where you can’t really focus on what needs to be done: studying. Revising a lot of information in a short timeframe can be nerve-wracking, let alone, being unable to understand course material may also add to your anxiety. We all agree that it is easier to succeed when you are less anxious and stressed. If everything seems to be stressing you, there are some things you can do to stay calm.
 
Set Realistic Goals 
Whether you have several weeks, or days before your exam, realistic goals help you put everything into perspective. Do not just study for an exam at the last minute; this will surely lead to exam stress. Divide your study time into periods over days, or weeks even. When you divide your study time over a longer period such as a few days or weeks, in this way, you will memorize the information more than studying the same data just a couple of hours before the exam.
 
Eat and Sleep Properly
Eat a proper breakfast on your exam day. Starting the day without breakfast will crash your energy levels, now imagine that with the stress and anxiety already. Make sure to have a healthy, energy-boosting breakfast; try eating foods that provide long-lasting energy, such as eggs or oats, and avoid foods that are high in sugar. Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep for your body's best performance and give your body a chance to rest. Limit your caffeine intake; it will only amplify your stress during the exam and you may notice symptoms like racing heartbeats 
 
It’s Okay to Ask for Help
Asking for help is never shameful, ask for and accept support from those around you, especially your family members and colleagues. For example; revising with peers is an effective study technique as it allows you to understand the information better. Furthermore, the emotional benefits of social support tend to include a better sense of confidence and autonomy.
 
Try to Relax
Relaxation techniques like breathing exercises, contracting and relaxing your muscles, or practicing yoga can help you a lot. Use some distraction strategies that can help you manage your stress or anxiety such as using a stress ball or chewing gum. Finish revising at least one hour before the exam to allow your mind to take a break and relax to perform better in the exam. Avoid cramming in last-minute revision, this can be overwhelming and make you feel unprepared. 
 
Forget About The Exam Once Finished
Leave the stress in the exam hall. Remember that once the exam is over, you can't go back and change anything about how it went. So, avoid asking your friends about their answers to certain questions; as if their answers are different from yours, this will just stress you out. Clear your mind and take time off by doing something you enjoy; try to pick any activity that you typically get lost in. 
 
In conclusion, pressure from other people around exams can be huge in addition to the pressure from studying and being examined. This can be hard to deal with, all you need is to remember that it's your life and your exam, with you in control.
