After a long day of work, we look forward to ending the day by just simply resting. We are not in the mood to be sociable or go anywhere, all we need to do is lay back and relax, enjoy the finer things in life like checking out what dishwasher to buy, easy recipes to do in the air fryer, organizing our closet...etc. We suddenly realize that we have become adults, and the idea that we are not young and reckless anymore scares us. We wonder if we are becoming less interesting, defeated by life’s mundanes, and have no aspirations to try something new. When we were young, we listened to songs that told us to live boldly, saw movies about going above and beyond, and the phrase “YOLO” has been thrown a lot to the point we took it as a mantra for any decisions we make, so when the moment we decide just to pause and relax, we feel guilty for not living life to the fullest, but should we feel that way? Why do we pressure ourselves into always going from 0 to 100 real quick? Is it fair to corner ourselves into always going on adventures? Sure, life moves pretty fast and should seize the day, but what if we don’t have the energy for it? Does it mean that we are wasting time? The short answer is NO, and let me explain why enjoying the finer things in life no matter how small they are, is valid. While Beastie Boys fought for our right to party, I will be fighting for our right to enjoy the mundane things in life.
There’s Nothing Wrong With Resting
Every day, there’s a new concert to attend, a fun hangout with friends to go to, a new place to discover…etc, declining to leave the house for the sake of resting is valid. You shouldn’t let societal pressure to socialize or be productive 24/7 get to you, for you are a human who needs to rest to function, even if the group chat is constantly texting you to get out with them if you don’t feel like it, then “NO” is enough reason to decline.
Your Physical and Mental Health Needs Rest Too
As we grow older, we become very selective about what to buy and how this will affect our financial status during the month, so we purchase things that we need to make life a little easier, instead of eating out, we cook. We choose to put food in the air fryer instead of using oil to make the food lighter and healthier. We buy dishwashers because, after a long day's work, we don’t want to do the dishes. We choose to turn on the TV and watch a light-hearted show, eat a nice meal, and scroll through social media searching for the next thing to buy that will facilitate our lives. These minor things don’t require much thinking or moving, you are relaxing and making yourself happy, so there’s no need to go out and see people if you don’t feel like it. Allow yourself to recharge and zone out.
Don’t Underestimate These Simple Acts of Happiness
No matter how boring you think this certain thing you’re doing, it certainly isn’t that boring because you’re enjoying yourself, and who has the right to discredit your feelings and how you should act to enjoy life? No one, that’s who. A simple thing like enjoying a hot chocolate, reading a book, going for a walk by yourself, or even singing out loud in your room releases dopamine, and that’s more important than getting out and becoming more adventurous when you’re not feeling like to.
