Last month when Oasis announced that they would be reuniting for a series of Concerts in 2025, I went to my Spotify and re-listened to their discography. One particular song that is my favorite song of their albums is called “The Importance of Being Idle.” Noel Gallagher wrote this song about being lazy, Gallagher stated in an interview “ I spent a lot of last summer just sitting around the house doing nothing, really impressed by my lack of drive." As I listened to the song, watched the music video, and dove deep into the meaning of the song, I had a feeling of vindication that there is no need to be productive all the time. In fact, there is beauty and importance in being lazy and procrastinators. In a fast-paced world where everything new trends get old in a few days, where every couple of months a new iPhone is released, and where it becomes more difficult to keep up with society’s demands, the economy, and constant changes, sometimes it’s good to take a moment to breathe and simply let everything go.

It’s understandable that we are being pressured to seize the day, to capture every moment, and to always keep on grinding because what you will miss today, you won’t have the chance to capture it again tomorrow; However, maybe not all things are worthy of capturing or not worthy of your attention nor energy.

Being “idle” is something you shouldn’t be ashamed of, as being relaxed and without a care in the world is beneficial for your health.
So allow me to explain why choosing to be idle is not only good for you but also important.

Being Idle Allows You to Go On a Detoxing Journey
As mentioned above, the world moves at such a rapid pace that it's almost sicking just to maintain its speed. This constant need to follow up is exhausting to your health, so once you decide to be idle and stop caring for a while, you are allowing yourself to stop and go on a detox, whether that's a social media detox or simply just not going outside. Every once in a while, your body and mind need to relax and stop overthinking and overworking, by allowing yourself to not do anything, you’re avoiding toxicity and pressure to consume you.

It Boosts Creativity
The majority of unique or major concepts come when we have free time to reflect and let our minds wander about. Sure great ideas also come from work, brainstorming, and research, but when we give ourselves time to just shut down, our minds become more efficient and versatile.
Creativity needs time and energy, dedication, and perseverance, so when taking a short break and go a fully idle mood, your mind is calm, soothed, relaxed, and ready to function.

You Conserve Energy for Later
The more you spend your time worrying about tiny things and constantly working 24/7, the less energy you have for planning your future, so by the time you actually need to get up and make some serious decisions, you feel worn out and tired.
That’s why sometimes being lazy or not feeling like doing anything is good for you.

I could list off many reasons why being idle is good for you, but to quote Oasis “I guess I'm just lazy” I’m saving my energy for later and going on an idle mode to keep my mental and physical health intact, I suggest you do the same and enjoy not doing anything. Take pride in being lazy, allow yourself to just zone and and keep your peace, stop caring about what you should do right now, and don’t allow the stress of work or society get the best of you.

If you need a break, take it, be idle, and also, listen to Oasis.
