Every year during the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims do a lot of alterations to their lifestyle. Beyond fasting and abstaining from eating and drinking for a certain number of hours, there is a lot more that this holy month is here to teach us. Having been spiritually cleansed during Ramadan, there are habits that when maintained after Ramadan, our lives can change for the better.
1. Discipline
Ramadan teaches us discipline in so many ways. Fasting nurtures determination and strong will and it teaches us self-discipline. Controlling our desires and not yielding to temptations helps us practice self-control.
2. Empathy and compassion
All religions teach us how crucial it is to be merciful, compassionate, and empathetic with those around us. Ramadan encourages us to incorporate these traits in our lives by practicing the act of giving, donating to those in need, and devoting time and effort to thinking about how we can give back and make the lives of others better.
3. Forgiveness
Ramadan is a month where we let go of anger, resentment, and grudges. It teaches us how to be more forgiving and how to ask for forgiveness. Ramadan helps us reflect on our past mistakes and take responsibility for our own doings.
4. Gratitude
As the fast pace of life slows down during Ramadan, we have more time to be reminded of and appreciate all the blessings that sometimes we take for granted. The spiritual state of the months brings us closer to God and gives us time to thank God for all the endless blessings.
