Cold days and longer nights make it hard for us to get out of bed, let alone the idea of working out. As the weather gets colder, we tend to become less active. We make all kinds of excuses from ‘it’s too cold outside’ to ‘I will get back on track right before summer’ just to make ourselves feel better about becoming lazier than usual. We will not deny the fact that working out in winter can be more challenging, even for the most dedicated among us, however, once you get into the habit of it and decide to break beyond all the excuses you make, you will become encouraged to exercise regularly. Here are tips on how to start and stay active in winter.
1. Pick an activity you like.
It doesn’t have to be high-intensity workouts, whatever keeps your body moving is fine. It can be aerobics, yoga, Pilates, or any other activity you like. When you go for something you already enjoy it will be easier for you to get up and just start moving.
2. Consider exercising at home.
If you are not used to exercising, start by working out at home until you get into the habit of it. Buy just the basics that you’ll need for a workout at home such as a pair of dumbbells, stretch bands, and a mat. You will find a lot of online programs and videos to help you work out at home.
3. Find a workout buddy.
Working out with a friend or a committed group will help you stay motivated. Unlike exercising alone when you can always make up a lot of excuses or simply decide to skip, working out with someone else will make you more committed and you both will encourage one another.
4. Exercise in daylight.
Since it gets colder at night, it is better if you exercise during the day and not at night. If possible, do a quick 15-minute exercise before your work to kick start your day energetically. If you keep your workout for nighttime, chances are you will be too tired and will probably skip it for the day.
5. Wear the right clothes if you are exercising outdoors.
Whether you are out for a jog, a run, or just to walk the dog, wearing the right clothes for the weather makes a lot of difference. A lot of brands have designed workout gear and thermals that are suitable for winter to keep you extra warm while exercising.
Finally, use every chance to move your body. For instance, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and park your car a bit further so you can walk extra steps. Any movement no matter how little is good for your body.
