Cairo Design Week is set to launch in Egypt for the first time later this year, as Egypt’s premier event for the design and creative industries. This inaugural year for Cairo Design Week will transform Cairo into a lively design campus, with events, activations, exhibitions, panel discussions, fireside chats, competitions, and industry meetups across different design and creative disciplines. The week, set to be held in a culturally and historically rich district of Cairo (to be announced soon), will feature a line-up of local and regional exhibitors and industry leaders, making it the ultimate space to meet, connect, network and share expertise and insights within the design community.
Hisham Mahdy, President of the first edition of Cairo Design Week, highlighted “The Cairo Design Week will be a cornerstone event that puts Egypt on the map as a destination for art, creativity, and design and aims to attract those communities from all over the world to discover, fall in love, and be eager to work with Egyptian creators. We want to empower and support the emerging young talent in the industry by enabling this platform to be a springboard for the exposure of their work for years to come.”
Mahdy added that he is proud to see “Egypt harness the power of art and appreciate its role in our society as one of the country’s pillars. The opportunity to launch Cairo Design Week is a step that encourages artists to elevate Egyptian art and design, and highlight the role that Egyptian craft has always played throughout history.”
The inspiration behind the week is to bring together thought leaders and decision makers front and center with the design and creative communities to showcase the industry’s latest innovations, ideas, and achievements under one platform. With this in mind, the goal of the week is to connect key stakeholders and increase their exposure to a wider audience, provide a new marketplace for Egyptian designers to display their work which will ultimately have a positive impact on the Egyptian economy, support local artists, makers, and manufacturers, and finally, boost Egypt’s tourism scene by encouraging international visitors to join the week of activities.
The design-packed week is also supported and spearheaded by the biggest names in Egypt, as Cairo Design Week’s Board of Trustees include Gamal Salah, Mohmad Hamouda, Mai Salama, Karim Mekhtigian, Rasha Kady, Hisham Mahdy, Azza Fahmy, Amr Mansi, Amr Helmy, Sherif Abdelhady, Adham Nadeem, Karim Elshafie, and Hany Shokry.
This year’s stellar line-up of exhibitors includes DeForum, Cairo Designathon, Esorus, FMD, Korba District, Designdustry, The Design Show, Fashion Design District, CDA Design District, Azad Art Week, and Creative Industry Summit, and finally the week will end on a high note with the prestigious CDA22 ceremony, where designers will compete in different categories in front of an all-star jury and winners will be announced in front of invited guests and VIP’s.
