CAIRO - 17 August 2022: Wood carving and the ayoyama wood industry is a profession known to the people of Damietta who work in the profession of making furniture.
Ayoyama is a craft that turns wood into a masterpiece of shapes and models of high artistic value.
Ahmed Shaaban Al-Serafy, a carpenter from Damietta, works in the carpentry craft, inheriting the profession from father to grandfather.
"I work as a furniture maker, and I love carving on wood and adapting wood to produce valuable artistic forms," Ahmed said, adding that in his craft, he uses special tools.
The beginning was the manufacture of a long series of wood without any welds. He worked on an entire palace model inside a large bottle, and sculpted a anthropomorphic character featuring Egyptian Player Mohamed Salah, in addition to several pharaonic forms.
He added, "This work is accurate and takes a long time, but any tiredness fades out when the craft is completed. He stressed that his work in the field of blacksmithing made it easy for him to invent and modify some tools that help him in his work in carving wood.
Al-Serafy added, I participated in many plastic arts exhibitions, including the Nile Arts Forum, the Sohba Art Exhibition, and the Arts Festival. I was honored in many meetings, which are honorary honours.
El-Serafy continued, “I hope for further development in order to prove that the Egyptian manufacturer and furniture maker from the people of Damietta Governorate is capable of innovation and creativity.”
