CAIRO – 20 June 2022: The Embassy of India in Cairo has celebrated of the International Day of Yoga at the Karnak Temple in Luxor Sunday.
The Indian Ambassador to Egypt, Ajit Gupte visited the Karnak temples to organize the activities of the International Day of Yoga in Luxor.
The embassy's official account on Twitter announced holding a curtain raiser for the 8th International Day of Yoga, and published pictures of participants who joined the celebration.
The embassy's tweet said: "Karnak temple is the second most popular site in Egypt after Pyramids, with Luxor being on UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE list."
"As you all know, yoga is the gift of the ancient Indian civilization to the whole world. Yoga is concerned with the spiritual, mental and physical aspects of a person, and therefore it helps people to adopt a way of life that is healthy in a way that contributes to promoting harmony between mind, spirit and body,” said Ambassador Gupte during the celebration.
The embassy further announced organizing a celebration at the 'Al-Azhar Park, Cairo on Tuesday, 21 June 2022 from 7 am onwards.
The Indian ambassador added that in 2014, the United Nations issued a resolution, based on a proposal made by Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, to consider June 21 of each year as the International Day of Yoga. This decision in itself is an acknowledgment of the importance and benefits of yoga.
That resolution was sponsored by 177 member states of the United Nations, and this was a record number in terms of the number of sponsoring countries, including the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The aim of this resolution was to raise and raise awareness of the valuable benefits of practicing yoga and to promote globally the adoption of a healthy and peaceful lifestyle based on the practice of yoga.
It is worth noting that since last year, the Embassy of India in Cairo has held the celebration of the International Day of Yoga through activities that depend on the actual attendance of the participants, away from the virtual participation that continued during the spread of the pandemic, especially after the decrease in the number of infected cases and the massive vaccination campaigns in all countries of the world.
During the period leading up to the eighth International Day of Yoga in 2022, the Embassy of India in Cairo organized a set of introductory events in the Alexandria Governorate at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on June 12, 2022, in Sharm El-Sheikh at the Sharm El-Sheikh Museum on June 14, 2022, and in Luxor at the Karnak Temple on June 19, 2022.
The embassy also organized a number of yoga workshops at Heliopolis Club and Al Shams Club, in addition to another workshop tomorrow (Thursday) at the Arab Contractors Club.
