Sun, air, and salt in the hair; it’s summer’s joyful spirit! We are relishing full-on summer vibes with a lot of beach and pool time and of course the golden rays of the sun. The long hours we spend in the pool and under the rays of the sun can cause a lot of damage to the hair. Needless to say that not following a healthy haircare routine, too much heat and styling can make things worse. So, here are some haircare mistakes to avoid in summer.
You swim and tan without protection
Just like our skin needs sunscreen, our hair too needs protection before swimming or tanning. Our hair needs to be sealed with a protective layer to prevent damage and dryness. Before you take dips in the pool or start tanning, use a little bit of leave-in conditioner or serum. There are also several products with SPF for the hair that will protect your hair against sun damage as well as keep your hair covered with a protective layer while staying in the pool. Also, don’t directly dip in the pool with dry hair because chlorine is harmful to the hair especially when dry. Rinse your hair with water before you get in the pool.
You shampoo very frequently and don’t condition as often
With summer’s heat, humidity, and excess oil production, it is all normal that we tend to wash our hair more often. But overly washing our hair can strip it of its natural oils and this is why it needs conditioning. Curly and dry hair will even need more hydration and moisturizing to tone down the frizz. Use deep conditioning treatments like hair masks or oil to keep your hair nourished throughout summer.
Pulling your wet hair back tightly with an elastic band
Your hair is at its most fragile state when it’s wet and is more prone to breakage. While pulling your hair back in a ponytail is summer’s favorite hairdo, avoid pulling tightly with an elastic band. Instead, keep it a bit loose or go for a messy bun and make it stay in place with a bobby pin or two.
Cutting your hair too short.
Summer is not the ideal season for chopping your hair too short, especially if your hair gets affected by humidity. As a result, your hair will shrink shorter and the excess frizz will make your hair look bulky. Also, try to avoid fringes in summer since they need a lot of styling with heat and products to keep them looking neat and flawless and you don’t want to get all these products in direct contact with your skin to prevent acne breakout.
Heavy and frequent styling with heat tools
Where already the sun and high temperature are already doing enough damage, the worst thing is to add up to all this with blow-drying, curlers, and straighteners. Avoid excess heat styling in summer and if you have to make sure you use heat protectors.
