Thinking of raising a pet? Then, there are some things to bear in mind before you take this step. Pets are emotional and sensitive; they encounter feelings like humans and need a lot of attention and care. Think of the dog, cat, or any pet you raise in your home as another member of your family. Like kids, you will need to keep them well-fed, entertained, and showered with love. With that being said, it is important that you create a healthy environment for your pet, just like you would normally do for yourself or a family member. Here is how you can build a happy and healthy environment for your pet.
1. Feed your pet a balanced and healthy diet.
Nutrition is one of the main factors to keep your pet happy and healthy. Well-fed pets have a shiny hair coat, healthy skin, good teeth health, and are more alert and energetic. A balanced diet for your pet should include protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Feed them chicken and meat as a source of protein, and consider mashed potatoes as a good source of carbohydrates. Mashed boiled vegetables mixed with soup will provide your pet with minerals and vitamins.
2. Make sure your pet drinks enough water.
Without enough water, the pet’s body won’t function properly and will face health problems associated with dehydration. A dog should drink about 40ml of water per kg of its body weight per day, while a cat needs around 60 ml per kg of its body weight per day. It is also important to keep an eye on your pet to spot early symptoms of dehydration. Watch for the skin’s condition, as well as the nose, mouth, and eyes. Also, dry and light gums can be a sign of dehydration.
3. Engage your pet in daily exercise and activities.
Daily exercise such as outdoor walks and playing fetch help keep your pet active and in good health. A 20-minute walk every day can reduce the risk of several diseases such as diabetes and heart problems. Also, buy a couple of toys for your pet so they can play with them on their own if you’re busy.
4. Look after their hygiene and keep them groomed.
Grooming helps you detect any skin or fur issues early on. Grooming includes nail trimming, brushing, cleaning the ear with paraffin oil, and regular baths. For bathing your pet, make sure you use lukewarm water and to use shampoos that are designed for animals.
5. Go for regular check-ups.
Just like humans, pets need regular checkups. Take your pet to the vet on regular basis to scan for any health concerns. Also, make sure you follow their vaccination schedules to protect them against serious diseases such as canine distemper, parvo, panleukopenia, and rabies. Deworming for dogs is also very important to avoid health issues such as bloody diarrhea.
6. Shower them with love and care.
Build a strong emotional bond with your pet. Belly rubs, petting, and cuddling are all ways to express love to your pet. Also, Play Pets are sensitive and emotional animals. Give them all your attention so they don’t feel lonely or abandoned, especially since pets are sensitive beings. Also, provide your pet with treats and toys, and teach your kids how to be good to them, respect them, and let them know that this pet is part of the household.
