1801 - Battle of Abu Qir breaks out in Alexandria between British and French forces near the ruins of Nicopolis in Egypt.
1804 - The Napoleon Code is adopted in French civil law.
1960 - Sharpeville massacre in South Africa by police forces in a demonstration against the apartheid regime, in which 69 people were killed.
2017 - French mathematician Yves Meyer receives an Abel Prize for his critical contributions to the development of Wavelet Theory.
