CAIRO – 1 March 2021: On March 3, 4 and 5, the Cairo Opera Troupe, in cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo, will present the magnificent Italian international musician Giuseppe Verdi’s “Un ballo in Maschera” (A Masked Ball), with the participation of the Cairo Opera Orchestra, the Cairo Opera Ballet Company and the Cairo Opera Choir.
The operatic performance will be held in the Grand Theater at 8 p.m.
The opera consists of three chapters and is accompanied by subtitles in both Arabic and English. Its events take place in Boston at the end of the 17th century and revolve around Ricardo, the ruler of the city and the lover of Emilia, the wife of his friend Renato. Renato discovers a plot against the ruler prepared by a group of military leaders with the help of the witch Ulrika, who was ordered to be exiled.
However, Renato asks the governor, Ricardo, to pardon her, for his knowledge of her spiritual potential, and therefore the governor decides to visit her hidden in a fancy costume to test her abilities. Once he arrives to her hut, he was in for a great surprise.
It is noteworthy that the “Un ballo in Maschera” was performed for the first time in the Apollo Theater in Rome in 1859, where Verdi combined in its music multiple dramatic styles in a homogeneous and balanced manner.
