Did a Russian mission find ships dating back to the Ptolemaic era in Alexandria?

CAIRO – 14 February 2021: The mission of the Russian Archaeological Academy of Sciences’ Egyptology Center announced the discovery of the underwater remains of merchant ships dating back to the Ptolemaic era in the Anfoushi area, west of Alexandria.

Director of the center, Sergei Ivanov, indicated that the importance of the archaeological discovery comes from the history and position of Alexandria.

Informed sources confirmed to ET that what the mission mentioned is merely an analysis of survey data that indicate that the devices are believed to be the remains of ships, but they have not been worked on until now, and therefore it cannot be confirmed that they are actually ancient ships dating back to the Ptolemaic era.

Sergei Ivanov explained that this discovery was found by the mission, which began in 2003,  in cooperation with Egyptian experts, according to Russia Today.

The director of the center's Russian missions in Egypt, Galina Bulova, said that the mission is carrying out excavations and archaeological surveys on the ancient commercial port of Alexandria, noting the importance of this archaeological discovery, which reflects and embodies the position of the city of Alexandria, as a global trade center and its extended and strong past relationship with all countries of the world.

Furthermore, Bulova described Alexandria as the center of the Mediterranean region throughout the ages, which is rich in archaeological wealth.
