1785 - Benjamin Franklin writes a letter to his daughter showing his frustration at choosing an eagle as a symbol of the United States rather than a turkey.
1802 - The US Congress passes a law establishing a library, and this library later becomes the Library of Congress.
1952 - A big fire breaks out in Cairo, during which about 700 stores, a cinema, a casino, a hotel, an office, and a club are gutted in the streets and squares of the city center.
