CAIRO – 2 July: The hashtag ‘Suggest a Novel to Read’ (#Rashah_Rewaya_Llkra2a) was trending on Twitter across the Middle East on Saturday. Twitter users used the hashtag more than 50,000 times to suggest novels that have inspired or moved them to recommend their favorite reads to others.

Among the choices were Arab and Western novelists alike, such as Paulo Coelho, Naguib Mahfouz, Radwa Ashour, Agatha Christie, John Green, Victor Hugo and Mourid Al-Barghouti.

One tweet recommended “Al-Tantoria” (The Woman from Tantoura) from Egyptian writer Radwa Ashour, charting the experience of a young Palestinian girl from foundation of the state of Israel throughout the political turmoil of the 20th century. The author of the tweet claims Ashour’s work as one of the most important novels a person should read as it “grants the power to understand hidden truths.”

Another tweet recommended the novel “The Forty Rules of Love” by French-born Turkish author Elif Shafaq, which interweaves a modern narrative of a dissatisfied American housewife with the life of the famous Persian Sufi poet Rumi in the 13th century.
