CAIRO – 14 January 2021: Head of the Museums Sector at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities Moamen Othman said that the holdings yet to be transferred from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir to the Grand Egyptian Museum belong to the collection of King Tutankhamun, and two heavy pieces.

Othman further indicated in press statements that work is underway to develop the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, in cooperation with the European Union, where the museum will be remodeled, providing an area for services and developing lighting and display works

Moreover, he explained that the development work is divided into 3 phases, including the development of some halls, the maintenance of the entrance and the display of the Tanis collection after the transfer of the Tutankhamun collection, and the development of the Old Kingdom collection.

According to Othman, the development work was due to be fully completed several months ago, but it was hindered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Othman also stated that there is a daily follow-up on the royal mummies in the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, in preparation for their transfer to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, in a grandiose procession to be witnessed by the whole world.

He added that the mummies were placed in a nursery or an air-tight room of nitrogen, and that they are in complete isolation. Daily follow-up is done through a sensor connected to Wi-Fi that can be controlled remotely, and through which existing data could be read without opening the mummy preservation room.
