CAIRO – 17 December 2020: The General Authority of Egypt’s National Library & Archives announced a 50 percent discount on the authority’s publications on December 20, 21, on the occasion of celebrating the World Arabic Language Day.
The celebration of the Arabic language was decided on December 18 of each year, being the day on which the United Nations’ General Assembly issued Resolution No. 3190 on December 1973, by which the Arabic language was recognized as one of the official and working languages of the United Nations.
Arabic was used as a working language in Executive Council sessions when it was included in the agenda in 1974 at the request of the governments of Egypt, Algeria, Iraq, Libya, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Tunisia, and Lebanon.
In October 2012, when the 190th session of the UNESCO Executive Council was held, it was decided to designate December 18 as the World Arabic Language Day.
In that year, UNESCO celebrated this day for the first time.
On October 23, 2013, the UNESCO Advisory Board for the International Plan for the Development of Arab Culture decided to adopt the World Arabic Language Day as one of the basic elements in its work program for each year.
