Egypt’s Min. of Culture receives UNESCO registration certificate of date palm

CAIRO – 15 September 2020: Egypt’s Minister of Culture Inas Abdel-Dayem received the certificate of registering the file "The Palm ... Knowledge - Skills - Traditions - Practices" in the Representative List of Human Heritage at UNESCO.

This comes in light of Egypt's participation in the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage during its fourteenth session in Bogota, Colombia.

Abdel Dayem said, "Registering The Palm file in the UNESCO Representative List of Human Heritage came in participation between Egypt and a group of Arab countries, namely Bahrain, Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, Jordan, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco and Mauritania."

This step followed the expanded forum held by the representatives of ALECSO (Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science) in Luxor to discuss the nomination of the file. This is in addition to several meetings in Khartoum, Tunisia and Abu Dhabi during which the procedures were completed and the UAE coordinated to present the file representing the Arab countries.

Abdel Dayem emphasized that efforts are in full swing to preserve the cultural legacy that characterizes the Arab community, highlighting the pride she takes in registering two historical elements belonging to the Egyptian intangible heritage in the UNESCO Urgent Safeguarding List, namely the “Tahteeb” game and “El-Aragouz” [The Clown Puppet].
