CAIRO – 28 June 2017: This year, Eid al-Fitr witnessed a fierce competition between public and private theatres to attract the crowds with quality dramatic offerings over the holiday period.

Treading the boards for public theatre was the great star Yahya al-Fakhrani, returned with his play ‘Leila Men Alef Leila’ (Night of a Thousand Nights) on the National Theatre stage to continue the booming success the production achieved last season.

The National Theatre displayed 12 plays alongside Fakharani’s in their playhouses in Cairo and Alexandria, including ‘Mayteen Men El Dehk’ (Fall From Laughter) and ‘Elasal Asal’ (Honey is Honey). El Salam Theatre housed ‘Kawaed Eleshk el Arboon’ (The 40 Rules of Passion) and El Gaad Theatre hosted ‘Lebet El Araf’ (The Fortune Teller’s Trick).

At El Taleea Theatre, ‘Youm an Katlo Elgenaa’ (The Day Singing Was Killed) is currently performing. As for children's theatre, the Artistic House of the Theatre hosts ‘Sahsah lama Yengah’ (When Sahsah Succeeds), written by late poet Salah Jahin and directed by late director Salah al-Sakka, as well as the classic fairytale ‘Snow White’ directed by Mohsen Rizk.

Regarding private theatres, ‘Masarah Masr’ (Egypt Theatre) was back, led by well-known Egyptian actor Ashraf Abdel Baky, presenting their single chapter plays written and directed by Nader Salah el-Din.

Egyptian star Mohammed Ramadan also returned with his famous play ‘Ahlan Ramadan’ (Welcome Ramadan) showing at the Pyramid Theatre. Ahlan Ramadan achieved great success in the previous four seasons according to the audience and critics alike. Ahlam Ramadan is an integrated play that combines comedy, political and social issues.
