Egypt’s prime minister issues decree to regulate Min. of Tourism & Antiquities activities

CAIRO – 24 June 2020: Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli issued a decree to determine the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' responsibilities after merging the tourism and antiquities files.

These responsibilities include the formulation of policies organizing various tourist and archeological work; preparing plans and programs to stimulate domestic and foreign tourism; highlighting Egypt's touristic and archaeological position in the world; supervising tourism services and activities; and controlling hotel and tourist establishments, as well as tourism companies, other travel agencies and marine activity centers.

Furthermore, the decree stipulated the ministry is responsible for monitoring activities of excavation, archaeological detection, restoration and registration; supervising the establishment of museums and museum displays; and supervising the development of services in archaeological sites and museums.

According to the decree, the ministry supervises the bodies affiliated with the minister, including the Egyptian General Authority for Tourist Promotion, Tourism Development Authority, Supreme Council of Antiquities, the Grand Egyptian Museum Authority and the National Museum for Egyptian Civilization Authority.

It is worth noting that this decision is the second of its kind in the history of the Egyptian state, where the first decision was issued in 1966, after the establishment of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for the first time in 1964.
