CAIRO - 20 April 2020: In cooperation with Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is launching a virtual visit to the Zoological Museum located in the Giza Zoo.
The museum is the first museum to be established in Egypt and the Middle East in 1906. It included models of rare embalms, skeletons, skins, and skulls for most animals, birds, and wild reptiles, in addition to various groups of ancient mummies.
Furthermore, the museum includes 1,352 mummified birds, 555 mammals, 259 reptiles, 115 skulls, 49 heads, and 35 skeletons. Some of the embalms date back to the centenary of the zoo itself, while some date back to the late 19th century.
The most recent mummy in the museum is of an orangutan, which was embalmed five years ago.
It is worth noting that the museum was renovated several times, first in 1962, then in 1988. It then closed for nearly 18 years, from 1998 to 2015. The museum was then reopened after renovation works in 2015.
Most of the animals and structures in the museum are for animals that were present in the zoo and died either because of old age or because of diseases and were then mummified once deceased.
The museum also houses fontats from abroad, which were confiscated, or acquired by the museum as gifts such as Goose Beans, which King Farouk brought in 1943.
